About this opportunity
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is seeking a PhD student to investigate how governance systems, organisational structures, departmental responsibilities and administrative silos influence the operation and maintenance of urban drainage and multifunctional blue-green infrastructure.
The research will focus on improving stormwater management by examining how stakeholder interests, regulations, resources and organisational arrangements affect different maintenance approaches. The project aims to support more coordinated, data-driven and environmentally responsible maintenance practices that reduce pollution entering coastal and marine ecosystems.
The successful candidate will:
Conduct theoretical and empirical research on urban drainage governance and maintenance.
Assess the organisational and governance feasibility of different maintenance approaches.
Identify institutional challenges, barriers and long-term alignment strategies.
Apply policy, legal, economic and nature-based frameworks in the research.
Collaborate with stakeholders in the water, wastewater and green sectors.
Collect and analyse research data.
Publish findings in scientific journals and present them at national and international conferences.
Complete doctoral coursework and participate in teaching or other departmental research activities.
The student will receive secure employment, academic supervision and professional-development opportunities within an international research environment.

Requirements / Eligibility
- Hold a master’s degree or equivalent qualification.
- Have completed at least 240 higher-education credits, including a minimum of 60 credits at master’s level, or possess equivalent knowledge obtained in Sweden or abroad.
- Have at least 90 credits in subjects relevant to landscape architecture, including 30 credits at master’s level. Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be assessed individually based on the proposed research.
- Hold a master’s degree in natural-resources engineering, civil engineering, landscape architecture or management, organisational or governance theory, or a related discipline.
- Meet the English-language requirement equivalent to Swedish upper-secondary English 6.
- Demonstrate excellent written and spoken English.
- Be able to work independently, take initiative and engage confidently with new research areas.
- Knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language is desirable.
- A valid driving licence recognised in Sweden is an added advantage.
