Senior Civil Engineer (Infrastructure)

About this opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Senior Civil Engineer to take a leading role in the design and delivery of large-scale urban infrastructure. This pivotal position requires a seasoned professional with deep analytical and design skills in city-scale infrastructure, including roads, utilities, and advanced stormwater management systems. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader, capable of guiding projects from conceptual design through to site supervision and completion. A critical aspect of this role is the mandatory, close collaboration with urban designers and landscape architects to create integrated, sustainable, and resilient urban environments. This is a unique opportunity for an expert engineer to make a significant impact on the development of major city projects.

Infrastructure Design & Technical Analysis
• Lead the conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design of all civil infrastructure for large-scale urban developments, including road networks (geometric and pavement design), potable water distribution, and wastewater collection systems.
• Conduct and oversee comprehensive hydrological and hydraulic modeling for stormwater management systems, including flood-line analysis and the design of sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS).
• Prepare and approve high-quality engineering documentation, including detailed calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction drawings, ensuring compliance with international and local standards.
• Utilize advanced infrastructure modeling tools to analyze and optimize designs for efficiency, constructability, and long-term performance.

Project Execution & Site Supervision
• Provide expert technical oversight during the construction phase, ensuring all works are executed in strict accordance with design specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.
• Conduct regular site inspections to monitor progress, identify potential issues, and provide decisive on-site solutions to technical challenges and contractor queries.
• Manage the review and approval of construction materials and contractor submittals to ensure they meet design requirements and quality benchmarks.
• Serve as the primary technical point of contact between the design office and the construction site, ensuring seamless communication and rapid resolution of issues.

Integrated Design & Stakeholder Coordination
• Mandatory: Work in close and continuous coordination with urban designers and landscape architects to ensure that infrastructure design is seamlessly integrated with the overall masterplan and public realm vision.
• Participate in integrated design workshops to align road corridors, utility easements, and stormwater strategies with urban planning and landscape architecture objectives.
• Liaise effectively with government agencies, regulatory bodies, utility providers, and other external stakeholders to facilitate project approvals and ensure compliance.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaborative problem-solving within the team.

Key Qualifications & Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field (mandatory).
• Minimum of 10 years’ hands-on experience in the design and site supervision of civil infrastructure for large-scale developments.
• Proven expertise in the design of roads, water and sewer networks, stormwater management systems, and flood risk assessments.
• Solid understanding of international design standards (e.g., AASHTO) and familiarity with local regulations.
• Skilled in Autodesk Civil 3D, Infraworks, and hydrology/hydraulic modeling tools such as HEC-RAS, StormCAD, WaterGEMS, or SewerGEMS.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks is an added advantage.
• Experience working collaboratively with urban designers and landscape architects on multi-disciplinary projects.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in Kenya or the East Africa region.
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration or eligibility with EBK or an equivalent body.
• Master’s degree in Water Resources, Transportation, or Urban Engineering is an advantage.

Soft Skills:
• Strong communicator, able to translate complex engineering concepts for diverse stakeholders.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking abilities.
• Proven leadership and mentorship skills, with experience guiding junior engineers.
• Effective stakeholder management and coordination with clients, authorities, and contractors.
