JOB OVERVIEW
The Head teacher is responsible for providing dynamic and inspirational leadership, both to the staff and to the students. They should ensure that the highest standards of learning are kept, to allow every child meet their full potential. Moreover, they are to provide professional direction to ensure the success and improvement of the school.
The Head Teacher is part of the Senior Management Team (SMT) which comprises of the Head teacher and Deputies. The Head Teacher is responsible for developing the policies of the school and the SMT are responsible for reviewing the policies and making recommendations for board review. The Head Teacher is also responsible of ensuring that policies are implemented throughout the school and reviewing the success or lack of it in the application of the policies.
The Head Teacher is responsible for the implementation of the policies of the school. This means that the Head Teacher should not only be completely familiar with these policies, but should also be responsible for understanding how these policies shall be practically disseminated to the teaching and non-teaching staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ethos and Vision
• Promote a culture of encouragement, support and challenge in order to achieve each child’s full potential and the highest possible educational standards.
• With the support of the staff and under the direction of the board, shape a vision for the school which reflects it is educational values and ensure this vision is clearly and effectively articulated, shared and understood.
• Translate this vision into agreed objectives and operational and development plans which will promote and sustain school improvement.
• Promote creativity, innovation and the use of appropriate new technologies to achieve excellence.
• Ensure that the ethos and practice of the School is reflected within its mission, objectives and philosophy.
Leadership and management
• To develop and implement the Nexgen Schools policies at all levels at all times.
• Develop, motivate and lead all staff to achieve the highest professional standards.
• Build a collaborative learning culture within the School and actively engage with other primary schools and other agencies to build effective learning communities.
• Ensure job descriptions and performance management for all staff are based on clear roles and responsibilities, reviewed at least annually.
• Ensure all policies are developed and kept up to date, working closely with the teaching staff, senior management team and the senior leadership team.
• Maintain sound procedures for the security, supervision and maintenance of the School environment ensuring that all health and safety regulations are met
• Manage your own personal professional development whilst ensuring the wellbeing of as well as a good work/life balance for all personnel.
• Contribute to the senior leadership team, forming a pro-active and effective working partnership with them.
• To keep up-to-date with educational reform and policy by ensuring an awareness of education initiatives and their usefulness.
• To attend all staff meetings, subject leaders’ meetings, senior leadership/management team meetings and other meetings which may arise.
• To prepare agendas for and chairing meetings of various contexts.
• To teach some classes in a given subject
• Manage change effectively.
Teaching, Learning, Curriculum and standards
• Ensure a consistent and continuous school-wide focus on pupil assessment and achievement, using appropriate data and benchmarks to set, monitor track and evaluate individual pupil progress.
• To plan and implement initiatives for the development of teaching and learning, with a requirement to provide a termly Inset programs.
• To oversee the departmental and school self-review procedures and to formally meet Subject Leaders on a regular basis to monitor standards within departments. To implement an ongoing program of observation to ensure high standards of teaching and learning and to promote the sharing of best practice.
• To be responsible for the monitoring and development of assessment, recording, reporting and target setting, including updating the Assessment Policy and ensuring that each student is reaching an appropriate level for their stage.
• To oversee optimal staff use of assessment data in the planning and revision of teaching schemes
• Challenge and remedy under-performance.
• Provide nurturing and attentive pastoral care for all pupils.
• Ensure exemplary standards of behavior and attendance.
• To monitor and promote the development of a Gifted and Talented policy to optimize provision for Gifted and Talented students.
Communication and consultation
• Build effective relationships with all stakeholders through excellent communication and interpersonal skills, taking and providing appropriate advice.
• To support effective communication by forwarding minutes and conclusions of meetings and any other documentation or memos to the relevant staff.
• Consistently use and develop information systems to ensure exemplary communication links with all stakeholders.
• Co-ordinate learning in pre-school and primary to ensure smooth transitions and continuity of learning. This includes developing an understanding of Nexgen School procedures and managing this process effectively.
• Regularly and effectively communicate the progress of every child’s learning to the relevant stakeholders.
• Maintain and develop our existing community links.
Child Protection, Discipline, Trips, Health and Safety
• To promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.
• To maintain good order and discipline among the students and safeguard their health and safety both when they are on the School Premises and when they are engaged in authorized school activities elsewhere.
• To oversee the accurate collection of risk assessment data for each off-site trip, and ensure that only safe and appropriate activities are undertaken.
• To ensure that all trips have a clear academic focus, and that venues and trip providers don’t give rise to concerns about conflict of interest.
• To ensure that the financial arrangements of all trips are above board, and that no instances of financial mismanagement occur.
Timetable and Staffing/Staff Development/Calendar
• To oversee the construction, implementation and review of the academic and co-curricular activity timetables in order to ensure that it enables the best quality teaching and learning to take place, allied to optimum provision of co-curricular activities.
• To review academic staff requirements with the Executive Head Teacher and liaise on all recruitment of academic staff.
• To develop and oversee the orientation program for new staff, in conjunction with the other relevant staff.
• To oversee the orientation for new students.
• To oversee the School Calendar.
Strengthening community
• To ensure learning experiences for students are integrated with the wider community.
• To collaborate with other agencies to promote the academic, spiritual, moral, social, charitable, emotional, and cultural well-being of students and their families.
• To create and maintain an effective partnership with parents and guardians to support and improve student achievement and personal development.
• To seek opportunities to invite parents and guardians, community figures, businesses or other organizations into the school to enrich the school and its value to the wider community.
Line Management Duties and Responsibilities
• To participate in the appointment of staff to departments and support the Subject Leaders in the drawing up of their specific job descriptions.
• To promote development and training opportunities for all departments.
• To assume responsibility for the effective operation of the Teacher Appraisal System.
